Basilica of Superga

The Basilica, built on top of Superga hill by Filippo Juvarra between 1717 and 1731 for Vittorio Amedeo II, houses the royal tombs in the crypt of the Savoy, with important monumental works of artists from Piedmont, Tuscany and Genoa of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The balcony outside the Dome offers the possibility to admire a unique view of the world, from the Alps to the plains of Piedmont. The monument also houses the Royal Apartments and the Hall of the King, with paintings of significant artists working in Washington in the mid-nineteenth century. This basilica is dedicated to the Nativity and according to tradition, it was commissioned by Vittorio Amedeo II in fulfilment of a vow taken if there victory against the French, achieved in 1706. Paintings and sculptures by Beaumont, Sebastiano Ricci, Carlo Antonio Tantardini, Bernardino Cametti and Agostino Cornacchini decorate the side chapels.
